2TB Disks for Greener, Less Expensive Archiving
According to Electronista Western Digital are releasing a 2TB disk within a week. And even if their timing is a bit out, it seems inevitable that it will be released very soon.
Benefits:
- Immediately twice as green as a 1TB HDD -> it stores double the data using the same electricity
- Immediately makes for a greener/less expensive cluster -> you need less nodes to store your data
- Promise of even more green credentials/electricity savings -> the disk will auto wind down to 5,400 RPM when not in heavy usage
The OM View
This is a big stepping stone: HDD disk capacity seems to be gaining above the curve with year on year improvements (see “How Long Before 100x Better HDD Energy Efficiency?“).
Whilst there will always be something greener/more environmental on the horizon (if you always wait to order then there’ll always be something else to wait for!), we feel we are in a very good place since we are able to take advantage of such improvements as and when the disks become proven as reliable.
